It’s a wonder! It’s a site! It’s Wildebeest migration
Happy new month. It July! As promised on our previous blog, 5 Top secrets of the Kenyan traveler, here is a more detailed read on the most awaited terrestrial animal migration on earth.
During July through November, the hunger games and the race to survival in the Serengeti-Masai Mara ecosystem begins. The Wildebeest and a smattering of some antelopes and Zebras cross the Mara River in search of greener pastures. The phrase ‘The grass is greener on the other side’ could never be more literal.
On the other hand, it is an unpredictable food festival for the African Lion and the Nile Crocodile. Why unpredictable? Because not even the Wildebeest know when they will cross the River. This is why a wide time gap is given. These animals do not know when it will rain neither do we. The rains can be ‘late’ or ‘early’, which will throw the whole wildebeest calendar out of sync. Rains trigger the migration.
However we need to address a misconception real quick. The river crossings usually coincide with peak safari season, hence the perception that this is the only time of the year that the wildebeest are on the move or can be seen is not entirely true.
A lot happens in between the months, Calving season; Little wobbling vulnerable wildebeest, zebras and antelopes and heartbreaking pounces by Lions and other predators. Intense big cat action in the Southern Serengeti, then the onset of the rutting season; mating season of mammals which includes ruminant animals such as deer, sheep, camels, goats, pronghorns, bison, giraffes and antelopes but extends to others such as skunks and elephants.
If you would love to take photos, you could make arrangement for a shoot at midday when the sun is brightest for the best high quality photos possible. Below is a table to guide you through the best of animal behavior
